What is the Speakers Bureau

The Speakers Bureau of NYCCHCD was created in 2001 to enhance our curriculum of activities by providing an on-going community-outreach arm of the organization. We have 25 active volunteers and over 100 outreach sites. Thus, the Speakers Bureau has become an additional centerpiece of the NYCCHCD mission.

DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIPS: MYTH, REALITY OR OXYMORON?

The continually evolving landscape of the practice of medicine as well as the "implementation" of health care demands a renewed look at this often confusing and sometimes precarious "relationship". We hope to illuminate the reasons why this relationship is naturally fraught with potential problems and how we as consumers of "medi-care" have a right and an obligation to pro-actively elicit the best care possible by establishing a partnership with our health care providers.

This training program is scheduled for October 7, 14, 21, 28 with one session dedicated to the viewing and discussion of the HBO film, "Wit" starring Emma Thompson and directed by Mike Nichols, which so effectively demonstrates various relationship models which can be experienced in the maze of  possible doctor/patient relationships.

NYCCHCD's training on this subject demonstrates how to use existing legal mechanisms (NYS Health Care Proxy Law) to appoint a health care agent. This training program seeks to enable volunteers to help the public:
